ipomoea alba moon flower

Question
We already have the white moon flower vine in our back yard. I drops A LOT of seeds which I'm now finding may be poisonous pets.  We're getting a puppy.  Should I be concerned?????

Answer
Hi Marcie,
Thanx for your question.  All parts of Ipomoea alba are poisonous.  But the seeds of I. alba are very tough and hard and very bitter tasting.  It is more likely an animal or small child would spit out the disgusting taste before any harm were to come.  I have not heard of any poisonings except amongst teenagers who are abusing the seed as a drug.  Small children and animals tend to be much more judicious about what they ingest than teenaged boys.  Can you keep the puppy away from the seeds until s/he is not so curious?  It's kind of like the person who asked me about castor bean plants.  Now in that case, the seed looks interesting and children have been known to try to eat them (particularly crawlers and toddlers) and that is extremely dangerous but animals generally leave them alone.  Personally, I'd just watch the pup and see what it does around the seeds.  If it acts too interested, fence off the plant until the pet is older and less curious.  I hope this helps.
Tom
