moon flowers

Question
My plants bloomed beautifully and have since gone to seed? formed small prickly balls-- how do i save them for next year?  they were a gift this year.

Answer
Hi Kaye,
Thanx for your question.  Moonflowers are also known as datura and jimsonweed.  All parts of the plant, including the seed are poisonous (can be lethal) if ingested.  Another name is thornapple because of the prickly balls you describe.  Allow the seed pod to dry so the seed will ripen properly.  You'll have to watch the pod everyday because one day it will just begin to burst open but there are tons of seeds inside.  I use a pair of gloves and cut the ball off of the plant and open it up over a paper plate.  Put the seeds in a glass jar and seal it so the seeds remain dry and cool.  Put the jar in a dark place.  Seeds can be grown just as tomatoes are (same family).  They germinate in about 2-4 weeks at 75 degrees F.  I hope this helps.
Tom
