Sunflowers

Question
I would like to collect seed to save and plant in the fall. My Sun flowers are still standing and face down.  The seeds inside are white.  Is this the time to take the seeds.  Can you suggest a good way to collect the seeds and when?

Answer
The best way is to cut off the flower heads and store them in a paper bag, preferably in a cool space such as a basement. In a couple of months, simply shake the bag and the seeds will dislodge. You can then store the seeds in a Tupperware container placed in the back of your refrigerator. This will simulate the dormancy period needed for germination. You can then sow the seeds next spring following your last expected frost.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
