sick evergreens

Question
I live in a very sandy area and recently, last 3 months, planted evergreen are starting to turn a little yellow from the bright and healthy green they were. What can i do to help them continue to grow

Answer
Hi Bob, First, check them for spider mites. Take a piece of typing paper out to the plants and slap the foliage on the paper.  Mites are about 1/4 the size of the period at the end of this sentence.  Mostly, you'll look for movement.  If that's the problem, spray them with something to control mites.
Could be a water issue.  Water thoroughly, but infrequently.  If they are new plants, you'll need to check them everyday and if they are new, are they in the right place?  They may not be happy where you planted them.  Has anything changed?  Are they in more shade or sun, has it been a wetter or drier year?  If it's not mites, it's probably physiological, we just need to isolate the cause.  Jim
