squirrles

Question
For the last two weeks, I have noticed squirrels digging holes in my yard. Right now there is an abundance of holes, which makes my yard look like a 36 hole golf course. Why are they digging and what can I do resolve this issue?

Answer
Sounds like they are foraging for old nuts. Spring is hard on squirrels because they have young and the trees haven't produced any new food. They are scraping the bottom of the barrel right now trying to survive.
Solutions? Well you can ignore it as will diminish soon. Or you can reduce the population through trapping, providing it is legal in your state.  visit http://icwdm.org/handbook/rodents/TreeSquirrels.asp  Don't think that relocating them somewhere else is humane. It isn't.  For information on the problems with translocation, visit http://icwdm.org/wildlife/euthanasia/relocation.asp For euthanasia information click http://icwdm.org/wildlife/euthanasia/default.asp

Don't waste your time with silly ultrasonic devices, coyote urine and other so called repellents. These entities do help people emotionally (as they give the feeling that something is being done) but the evidence of their actual effectiveness has not been demonstrated. Read why repellents fail. http://www.icwdm.org/Prevention/repellents.asp

I would not advise feeding them to help them get over this dry spell. As you will probably encourage them to breed more just exasperating the problem.

I would love some high quality photos of the damage (3mg or higher). Send them to [email protected]

There will be a lot of information there.
Otherwise, feel free to write back.

Disclaimer: As with any activity, remember that animal damage control comes with its own risks and problems which can include but are not limited to legalities, health threats, and personal liabilities. Be sure to follow all state laws governing wildlife and make sure you have a thorough understanding on how to resolve the animal damage complaint. My advice is only as good as your understanding of me and my understanding of your situation. If you have any questions be sure to write back.
