daylily

Question
I live in the Ft. Worth TX area.  I will be moving to Oklahoma City within the next 10 months - date uncertain.  I want to take the daylilies (from the Indiana homeplace) that I have established here to the new OK location.  They will become lank and burn out in the dry hot summer and since they are in 20' of curb strip they will not enhance the "curb appeal" of the house to potential buyers.  I would prefer apply an unbalanced fertilizer now, emphasizing root nutrition and begin to mow the strip allowing the Bermuda grass to invade.  Anecdotal evidence from a friend suggests that the lilies were stronger the following year when she mowed them.  Is this wise?  When is the best time to lift the roots and what is the best way to store them?  Winter garage temp in Ft. Worth remains at about 40* or above.  Can I go bare root or must I pot and water them?  Can you refer me to a reference book?

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
Thanx for your question. You can move day lilies anytime as long as there is no anticipated frost for 30 days after you dig them up and move them.  I don't know about letting the Bermuda grass invade.  I would think that grass would eventually strangle the plants, so I wouldn't do that.  I would not store the plants bare rooted.  If you're not moving until next spring, why don't you just wait til then to lift the roots.  The worst thing that can happen is they may not bloom that year but they will the following year.  Try this link for more informatioin.  http://www.daylilies.org/

I hope this helps.
Tom
