bonuganvillas

Question
If you have your bonuganvillas planted in the ground and live on the coast of North Carolina and they freeze will they come back in Spring? Can you cut them back and cover them with straw?

Answer
Hi Donna, Bougs are tropical plants and will not survive a freeze; you really can't cover them with straw or mulch and protect them, because they do not go dormant and you would be killing them by suffocating them, not to mention preventing them from continually growing. The tale of the tape Donna, is they need to be lifted in a cold climate zone and potted up, brought in and returned back out in the spring. Prune them back, lift them and then pot them. Nick
