Holly

Question
We have several Holly shrubs in the front of our house that have struggled for the last eight or so years. They seem to be losing all of their leaves almost like something is eating them. I live in Southeast Michigan. The shrubs get watered regularly and they have a northeast exposure. Any ideas on how the bring these back to health?

Answer
Jim,

From the description that you provided, I would have to say that the hollies have been damaged from winter injury.
With the North East exposure that these plants have, they will be damaged every year from the cold winter winds. I would recommend fertilizing them twice a year to strengthen them and to try to protect them during the winter with either anti-dessicant or screening.

Good luck,
Ed Gulliksen
