transplanting

Question
I live in Prince George BC where the temp is still dropping to -5 at night. My lilacs are starting to get leaf buds but I need to move them to my new house. can they be moved right now or should I wait till they leaf out.

Answer
Howdy Rod,

I'm Coach Dave, mild mannered plant expert for The Home Depot, and plants are my area of expertise.

Wow, -5, I'm surprised they even had buds since that is pretty extreme temperature for most plants.

I would move them as soon as possible to either the garage or a sunny area in my home. If you take

care to dig a large amount of area around them you will not disturb the fine hair roots.

Lilacs usually have a hardiness zone of 3-7 and some even to 9.

If you decide not to dig them up you can cover them with: burlap, straw, or even plastic.

stay warm and happy gardening,

Coach Dave
