butterwort lighting

Question

butterwort
Hello again I just bought two temperate butterworts and I was just wondering how much sun should I give them is 4 to 5 hours of direct sun with indirect sun for the rest of the day ok. And will they grow well in peat moss? Also should I grow them in a water tray, and can you also Identify these butterworts?

Answer
Hi Jesus,

These are most likely Pinguicula primuliflora.  They grow just fine in standard peat/perlite mix.

This species definitely has a habit of being short-lived.  I've found a couple things help them out quite a bit.  First is larger pots.  Pot them up in about 6" pots.  They seem to do better if the soil isn't quite as wet since they are very prone to rot.  Keep their soil moist, but don't keep them sitting very deep in a water tray.  As far as light, they do best with partial sun.  If you can set them up so that other plants partially shade them, they seem to really like the dapple light that provides.  They don't do as well in full shade.  They are also cold-hardy to the mid 20's.

Good Growing!
