washingtonia fan palm

Question
I have a fan that is actually 3 plants all together.  They have been in a ceramic container for years and we got them out yesterday. Can I cut and separate the three and if so how do I cut them.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Jeri, the answer is yes, however, you must be careful when separating them that you don't deplete any of the three of their own root system; soak the entire rootball first and let sit for awhile, this will lessen the transplant shock that will probably take place; Try to separate them without cutting if possible, by tugging persistently at the root ball, again, try not to damage any secondary roots if possible; it would be so much easier if you knew somebody who could do this for you, do you live near your Cooperative Extension Service? they have Master Gardners that will be happy to help you with this...in any event, after you separate the units, hopefully with soil still intact, then give each a container that is at least 3 times the size of the root system, and provide drainage medium on the bottom 2 inches of the container, fill the rest with a light potting mixture.
