Chinese Fan Palm

Question
Hi Will,

I'm considering purchasing a Chinese Fan palm, however, know very little about them and after reading your previous answers to palm questions, realize that not all palms are created equal! Is the Chinese Fan palm a good choice for an indoor plant or is this bargain ($9.00 for a 10") too good to be true?

Thanks for your insights,
Seven

Answer
Hi Seven,

That is certainly an excellent price! And it is a good indoor plant as long as yo can provide the light and water suggested below.

Provide your Chinese fan palm (Livistona chinensis) with lots of bright light, but protect it from hot, direct, mid-day sun. Place in right in front of an east window for best results.

Room temperatures are best, but this plant will actually tolerate outdoor temps as low as 25 degrees if they are introduced gradually.

Keep it tightly potted and fertilize sparingly at half-strength. Water thoroughly only when the top quarter of the soil is dry. Avoid using hard water.

High humidity helps, especially when new leaves are emerging. As with all palms, be alert for spider mites.
