palm pods

Question
I have 6 palms and last year the put out 10 pods before the cold hit here in SC. Now they are hard and brown and range from 12 inches to 36 inches long. Should I cut them off and if so how? Or is it ok just to leave them alone. I want to do what is best for the plants.

Answer
Hi Mike, you didn't mention the type of palm, but I am pretty sure you are referring to "seed pods" they begin as a "elephant tusk" type growth and burst (eventually) into a flower and subsequently the flowers turn into seeds which again, eventually disperse by just falling from the pod. I would cut them off, if for no other reason, aesthetics, they will eventually make a mess if you don't; if you choose to leave them be, then thats fine also, either way, the palm will not be harmed.
