transplanting irises

Question
My next door neighbor gave me several iris plants 8 - 10" tall.  I kept them in soil and watered them.  After preparing a place to plant them, I planted the irises but the leaves are turning yellow and are laying on the ground.  Do I need to cut the leaves off or what is my next step??  I appreciate your help very much as these flowers are colors that I do not have and would very much like to save them.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Rose,
Thanx for your help.  I wouldn't cut off the leaves just yet.  If they end up turning completely yellow, go ahead and trim them off but if they remain a healthy green even though they may be drooping, they are still gathering energy from the sun to store in their rhizomes.  I think your plants are fine, they are just kind of shocked from the transplant.  Iris are very tough customers.  I hope this helps.

Tom
