D. filiformis - Red Leaf Dewthread need stratification

Question
Allexperts,

One of my D. filiformis - Red Leaf Dewthread has sent up flowers.  I harvested the seeds.  Then  nothing came up or germinated.  I am wondering if the seeds need some germination period?  I thought since the plant came from a warmer climate the seeds would not need that germination period.   Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

weylin

Answer
Hi Weylin,

The Red Dewthread comes from central Florida which is a zone 9 climate.  They do have frosts occasionally during the winter.  It can be cool for extended periods also.  My experience with them has been the same as you, seeds don't seem to germinate in the greenhouse.  They do need stratification.  They seem to produce seed prolifically just like all filiformis, yet we don't have them popping up all over the place the way we do capensis and spatulata.  Give them a cold, damp period of about 6 weeks.

Good Growing!
