stratification

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I just bought from you Sarracenia seeds and I was wondering if it is possible to make stratification by pouring some water in the little bags the seeds came in and puting those in the fridge. Or is that just plain stupid?

Thanks!
Alonso

ANSWER: Hi Alonso,

Actually that should work just fine.  I recommend using distilled water since it will be relatively sterile.  If you think about it, it is probably common for seeds to drop in the the wild into small puddles of water.  Just be sure to check weekly to watch for mold.

QUESTION: hi,

well that's good news. About fungus growth, will the chances of getting a fungus infection increase or decrease in comparison to putting the seeds in a pot in the frigde?

Thanks, Alonso

Answer
Hi Alonso,

If you use distilled water, it will be less.  Distilled water has nothing in it, and since the seeds were harvested, then stored dry, little fungal spores will be present.  As a result, what spores do try to grow have little food.  Putting a little fungicide in the water is still a good idea.
