container + oleander

Question
I want to create a privacy fence useing oleander  the area is an old driveway covered in rock impossible to dig  so I thought I might grow oleander in large wiskey barrels?  If not possible what shrub would work like this?

Answer
Oleander, also called Nerium, will grow fine in containers. They are not hardy in cold climates. They need full sun. They tollerate heat, and drought. They are, however extremely poisonous. Use gloves when handling them, and don't burn them or let small children or animals around them. Characteristic poisoning symtoms are, nausea, vomiting, accelerated, or retarded heartbeat, and cardiac arrest. They are beautiful shrubs and do make an attractive, evergreen, and flowering hedge.
For flowers, and evergreen, The English Laurel, American Holly, Sweet Acacia, Heavenly bamboo, Photinia, Hibiscus (Rose of China), Flannel bush, Wintergreen, Bearberry, Mexican Orange, Camellia, Lantana, Indian Hawthorn, and Viburnum. I have given you the common names of these shrubs, if you need the botanical name, let me know.
Most of these shrubs are between 5 to 10 feet tall, depending on the variety. They will all do fine in a large container.
When planting a hedge, some plants are too expensive to buy several, so that may limit your choices.
Another factor is the speed of growth, and spread.

When you get them planted, consider putting a drip irrigation system in the expenses. You will be glad you did.
