Rhubarb Plants

Question
QUESTION: I live near Sacramento, CA., last year we planted some rhubarb and it grew beautifully, this winter we protected it somewhat and now it is growing back with huge leaves and the plants have what I call pods on them.  The plants are healthy and surviving.  What do I do with the pods? I can't seem to find anything on the internet that answers my question.  Thank you so very much. If you need a photo I can try.

ANSWER: Hi Mary,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds like your plants are getting ready to bloom.  Cut the pods off because the plant will expend a lot of energy on a bloom you don't really need.  You want all the energy going to the production of stems because the stems are what you are going to eat.  Do not eat the leaves because these contain oxalic acid which is toxic.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Are the pods good for anything once they have been removed?  Thank you so much for your help. Mary

Answer
Hi Mary,
Thanx for your question.  I'm not much of a crafter so I can't really tell you if there is any interest amongst the people that work with dried flowers.  You might check with a crafting blog or website and inquire as to any interest there might be for it.  I hope this helps.
