Majesty Palm tree(Ravenea rivularis)

Question
My husband bought me this palm tree to plant in our yard.  We live in Lexington, South Carolina.  Can it be planted outside like we were told it could? How big does the root system get? We were planning on planting it and others around our septic tank to keep people from driving on it and want to know if it is safe to plant near it?

Answer
Hi Julie, you are in a zone 6 or 7 I'm thinking (not knowing exactly where in South Carolina you are located) so I would be leery about you getting a hard freeze, which would kill it; you could put it in a container however, and move it in if a freeze is forecasted. The negative part of your plan however, is Majestys don't like a lot of sun, and do much better in dappled shade, you didn't mention if your septic was shady or sunny; it will survive there, but the fronds will show stress from the direct sun, by the tips browning and curling. It isn't the best candidate for that location, an Areca palm would be a better choice. regards Nick:)
