palm tree care

Question
my palm tree has leafs growing at the base of the tree. i don't know what kind it is. it came in a floral arrangement at a funeral. I've had it 2 or 3 years it about 3ft. tall one stem or trunk with single leafs coming off the main trunk. it is in a large pot indoors till summer then i set it outside . but i don't know what to do with the growth at the bottom. can you help? thank you , Connie

Answer
Hi Connie, it sounds like an Areca Palm, and it is normal for growth to develop from the bottom; you can snip it off if you want, it won't harm the Palm, or you can just leave it to develop. Arecas can be grown like that or pruned so that a trunk develops, almost like Bamboo. Nick
