pygmy palm tree

Question
Recently we were away on holidays and came back to a completely dried out pygmy palm tree. Can I cut it right back to start fresh. All the branches feel dried out and brittle.
Thank you
Sandy

Answer
Hi Sandy, unlike a shrub, a Palm cannot be pruned back, you must take care not to cut the crown (the top..), individual fronds may be removed if they are completely brown, but thats about it; keep it watered properly and spray the crown with a Copper Fungicide to deter any fungal problems from developing. Thats the extent of care you can apply, the rest is up to the Palm itself to either survive or decline. Nick
