stump rot

Question
I took a small, indoor palm tree from work.  Went to repot it and noticed tha the stump was half rotted through.  There is a branch coming out of the side of the stump going
up that has the palms on it and it is healthy.  Can I cut this branch with the palms on it from the stomp and start it as another tree?  Do I put the branch in water?  I have
no clue as how to maintain a palm tree.  Thank you

Answer
Hi Frankie, Go ahead and plant the entire rhizome (underground root system) even though it may seem rotted through, for the healthy part will eventually develop its own roots; you can't detach it from the existing root system or it will decline and die. Keep it in an area where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade , and keep the fronds (leaves) misted. Fertilize it with a palm fertilizer every 3 months and water as needed (when it is dry down about a third of the way into the soil). Nick
