i have flies!!!

Question
I have a yucca elephantipes plant and another palm-esque plant both potted.
They were outside and we just got a composter...i was excited when i found
our first batch of compost to be ready...so i quickly topped my plants off with
the compost.  It started to get chilly so I brought them inside for the
winter...One day maybe a few weeks after bringing them in  i wanted to clean
them up a bit taking away the dead leaves etc...I noticed what appeared to be
miniature white worms in the soil...i quickly realized they were maggots and
that there were a whole bunch of fruit flies everywhere!!! Then a week later
we have a S*** load of normal house flies aswell as fruit flies...We kept the
house ridiculously clean and I sprayed the soil lightly with household
cleaner...and kept watering the plant in hopes of drowning them and turning
up the soil as much as I could..and swatting like mad...but it just keeps
getting worse...I realized that some of the compost must have not been fully
decayed therefore gving them a birthplace and food rrgggg ...so my question
is...

Am I doomed to re-pot my plants? Or is there something else I can do?

-Thanks Brianna

Answer
Hi Bri, what happened was your compost never got hot enough to kill any eggs and they hatched! You have no choice now but to discard all the soil and begin anew...sorry, I have seen it happen numerous times and it must be completely eliminated and new soil put in place. Nick
