transplanting

Question
I have several maui ixoras planted too close to some other shrubs.  I live in north Florida.  When is it ok to transplant them?  What follow up do I need to do once transplanted?

Answer
Hi Jessi, ok, prune them back and then water them real well, making sure that the root ball is good and moist; this will allow you to get the entire rootball intact with moisture and soil still attached. Have the holes already dug where they will be replanted, don't augment the soil at all in the new site, they must adapt to the existing soil; if you augment the soil the roots will grow in a circle and not want to expand out into the existing soil which is certain to be less desirable for them, so soil that comes out of the new location, goes back in; makes sure they are planted at the same level as they came out and don't pack down on the soil when you are done, water them well to settle the hole and then backfill to bring it back up to level. Thats about it Jessi, right now is a fine time to do it, I wouldn't transplant from late Oct. thru spring, but now is just fine. Nick
