Help My Arbor Vitaes

Question
Hi!
We planted 50 of these trees aroung the outside perimeter of the yard. We Planted them in June. Had a great summer with them but noticed mid-Sept., they started to turn bownish-yellowish in the middle of the trees as well as some on the outside. I just can't figure out why all summer they did fine and now they are having some problems. What should I do as far as feeding them anything to help them? I don't want to lose them. We paid too much.  Thanks alot.

Answer
Lisa,

The die back of the interior leaves is a normal condition for all evergreens. As the weather gets cooler, most evergreens will start to prepare themselves for the winter months, this entails dropping their inner growth.

As far as outer growth being effected, I think they they may be showing some transplant stress. Give them a good shot of low nitrogen fertilizer this fall and again in the spring to help strengthen them. Also make sure they are mulched, this will encourage stronger root system development through the fall and winter.

Good luck.
