bogenvelia

Question
QUESTION: can i bring in my bogenvelia for the winter?  I live in minnesota. Do I prune it, what kind of light and temp?

ANSWER: Hi Kim,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, you can and should bring the bougainvillea in for the winter.  It will not survive Minnesota winters.  If the plant is unruly, you can prune it up to keep it neat.  Bougainvillea is going to suffer a little coming indoors and because that far north there is going to be a major reduction in sunlight.  Don't be surprised if the plant loses a lot of leaves.  Do not feed it but keep it in a sunny window facing east or south.  Water it just enough to keep it from drying out completely.  It will probably stop blooming too.  In the spring, after outdoor temps are consistently above 50癋/10癈, put the plant outdoors in the shade for about 10 days and then in full sun.  Start watering it daily and make sure the pot drains well.  Side dress the plant with well-composted manure and again in mid-summer.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: I also have a New Ginuea Impatient and an Elephant Ear Begonia.  Can those be brought in for the winter and what light, water and temp?  Thank you for your assistance

Answer
Hi Kim,
Thanx for the followup.  Yes, you can bring the New Guinea Impatiens and the Elephant Ear Begonia in for the winter.  Place them in a sunny window (East or South window).  Water them about once a week and don't feed them until spring time.  It will be safe to put them back outdoors after temperatures are consistently above 50癋/10癈.  I hope this helps.
