columbine

Question
Last summer I redid a flower bed into a rain garden.  I transplanted three columbine onto the rim of the garden.  This year they came up beautifully, have blossoms on them but have now dropped all their foliage.  What would make them do this?  I have columbine in another bed and they are doing just fine.  Thank you for your time in answering my question.

Answer
Hi Cheryl,
Thanx for your question.  It sounds like columbine sawfly larvae and if they find your other columbines, they're next.  Here's an article I think you my find helpful from the University of New Mexico.

I hope this helps.
