ivy plants for window boxes

Question
Hi Will: I will like to place outside my windows, boxes with ivy plants. The reason I would want ivy, is that I want to get the vines to cover and climb the brick walls. I get a lot of sun-southern exposure windows and I live in New York City. Which type or kind of Ivy would you recommend I plant and by when...
Thanks, Julio

Answer
Hi Julio,

Boston ivy is the best wall climber. However, I don't know that it will work well if they are grown from window boxes. It is much preferable to grow them in the ground where the roots are better protected from hard freezes and excessive heat and drying.

Alos be aware that ivy can damage brick walls over an extended period of time.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
