red maple

Question
i have a red maple in the yard and NOTHING will grow under it...  there is a very large pine about 25' from that and  that part of the lawn looks pretty skimpy too...  what would you suggest?

thank you

mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Lawns generally have a tough time trying to grow under trees, the reasons for this are numerous; light levels are low, soil conditions are dry and the trees steel all the nutrients and goodness from the ground.

Do the below to counteract the above.

Grow shade tollerant grass species such as Lolium perenne.
Water the grass sown beneath trees regulary.
Feed the lawn regularly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Collect up fallen leaves in the autumn.
Remove some of the lower branches from the tree and also thin out crown to allow more light onto the grass.

Still not sure what to do, then don't hesitate to send me another email.

Good luck!

Dr Dean Marston.
