maple trees

Question
i would like to plant a maple tree, i have one of the old fashioned maples like we had in our yard, when i was a child over 55 years ago, i have a small area in the front of my house that needs shade and I would love to plant this maple tree..is this a deep rooted or shallow rooted tree?  the leaves are goldish, orange, pinkish  color in the fall

Answer
Connie:

The answer depends on where you grew up.  If your home was north of the Sandhills region of eastern US, the tree was probably a sugar maple, acer saccharum.

If you grew up south of the Piedmont region of the eastern US, it was probaly a red maple, Acer rubrum.

Both will appear to be similar.  The sugar maple is more stately and has pointed, five lobed leaves.  The red maple can have pointed, five or three lobed leaves.  Maples are considered shallow rooted.

Both good trees.  Best wishes.
