Coastal Redwood Propagating

Question
Hi Mike:  We did the cutting procedure exactly as you advised with the plastic covering, etc., but very quickly have mold developing in the potting soil.  Please advise..too wet?  Too much sun?

Answer
The soil is most likely to wet. It should be damp to the touch, but not soaked. You can place a slit or small hole in the plastic to help release some of the moisture.

By the way, the algae will not harm the plant. You can scrape it off the top of the soil, and the soil should return to its normal state. This is very common in greenhouses and in starter packs for seedlings. Just remember to remove the plastic after a few weeks, since the plant's roots should be established by that time.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
