cucumber

Question
From Northern Ontario along the North shore of Lake Superior:
I have started growing veggies in a greenhouse this year.  My Cucumbers began to get a fuzzy fungus on them a couple of weeks ago.  It appears to have spread to my peppers and I even see it on my tomatoes ( It seems to form around the flowers as they wilt and will progress to the leaves)
Have you any idea what it is, and how I may sterilize the green house soil so that it does not plague me for years to come!?

Answer
Lori, this can be one of many diseases.  The most likely are downy mildew, powdery mildew, galls, or mold.  Regardless of which it is, they are all fungus related.

The only alternatives are to rotate the crops or sterilize the soil.  Soil can be sterilized by applying a copper or lime based fungicide on the soil, and then covering the soil with black plastic.  The heat generated under the plastic will destroy any bacteria or nematodes left in the soil.  You must leave the plastic on for at least four months to ensure full sterilization.

I hope this answers your question.  Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of further assistance.

Regards,

Mike
