soil

Question
What is PH factor and how it is related to soil. What is best PH level and how to improve good PH in soil.Give full detail about PH

Answer
Dear Vivek, pH factor is a test of the acidity or alkalinity of something.  The scale goes from 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral, 1 is strong acid, and 14 is strong base.  Soils also test in pH, with acidic soils being sour and alkaline soils are described as 搒weet?  One point on the pH scale is 10 times the previous one, so if you have an acidic soil of 5 that means it is 10 times more acidic than a soil of pH 6.  Most soils are between 4.0 and 8.0.  When soil becomes too acidic or alkaline then the plants can抰 absorb the fertilizer well.  For apples the ideal pH should be between 6.0 and 6.5.  You would have to get a pH meter to test this.  To lower the pH (if it is 7 you will need to lower the pH to 6 or 6.5 by adding sulfur (usually in a sulfate) and to raise the pH (make more alkaline) you add lime (finely ground or pelleted limestone).  Often to lower the pH, you can add peat moss, partially rotted sawdust, or aluminum sulfate (dilute and use sparingly).  I hope this information is helpful.   Feel free to ask me anything, and if I didn抰 explain this well enough or if you have more questions, please let me know.  Melissa
