redwood burl

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I got a Redwood burl about a 2 months ago in San Fra. its in shallow water in my room and there are many sprouts the tallest one being about a foot. it seemed to be doing fine but in the past cupple of days some the the sprouts have been getting gray and shrivleing up. I change out the water every week and i poor new water on it ever day. Am I watering to much? Im really worried, any help would be greatly appriciated.

ANSWER: No it is not the amount of water but the water does not have any nutrients.  Burls can be planted under the appropriate conditions to allow the shoots to form roots and then grow into trees, but the typical buyer of a redwood burl places it in water, watches the shoots grow, then disposes of it after the shoots die from lack of nutrients. I would suggest that you place the burl with its roots in a small pot filled with potting soil. The soil must be kept damp or wet. Use a potting soil with nutrients added. If the leaves start to turn yellow fed it with Miracle-Gro?Evergreen Tree and Shrub Food 28-10-10 with micronutrients.

QUESTION: the only thing is the my burl hasent grown roots, can I still plant it in soil? Also thank you so much for your help.

ANSWER: Yes go ahead just keep the soil wet so it will grow roots. The main problem with the water it did not contain anything to keep the plant a live. You could even add a little miracle gro to the water and it would work but I would use the potting soil.

QUESTION: Alright almost done ^^;. My last consern is that I live in minnasota, so should I bring it inside when the weather gets to cold and how cold would you think that would be. Thank you so much for all your help ^^.

Answer
Yes I would do all the rooting inside as you have done with the water. In fact I would think about growing the tree in a pot that you can move inside since the weather in Min. would not let this tree survive a winter. Redwood do not grow in the wild there. The tree will not grow too large there but the pot as the tree gets larger will need to be change to a larger pot. On of these days it may become too large to move back and forth inside and out.
