Planting around redwood trees

Question
Hi. I would like to make a small flower bed around a group of redwoods in my yard. I would like to build a low wall, fill in with soil and add plants. Could this harm the trees? Is there anything I should know before I start? Thank you.

Answer
Generally I would say do not add soil around trees in a bed. This will cause the soil around the roots to compress and kill or damage the roots of the tree. You can add about 3-4 inches of soil without causing problems. I would not think this is enough soil for a flower bad. Sorry I would not recommend doing this.
