morning glories

Question
Tom - I took your advice and planted a lovely, variegated type of morning glory
by my deck to draw hummingbirds.  Got a late start this year, but I am getting
blooms everyday now, and it's really taking off.  The summer sun is ferocious in
MD and the plant is in hot sun until about 4 in the afternoon.  How often should
I water?  Is there anyway I could get this plant to come back next year?

Answer
Hi Linda,
Thanx for your question.  Morning glories originated in Mexico and although they are adapted now throughout North America, they love the summer sun.  I would water them once a week if you are not getting regular rains.  If you have them in a pot, you'll need to water in the morning and then check in the evening to see if the pot has dried out.  Here in Kansas, we have to water twice a day when it gets above 90 due to the evaporation.  There is a purple and white variegated morning glory I had that came true from seed.  I think they are called Flying Saucers and they are available through several different seedsmen.  I think Seeds of Change, Thompson and Morgan and Rebecca's. I hope this helps.
Tom
