my tree

Question
I planted about a 5 foot weeping cherry early this spring the root ball was in a burlap bag. I was told that you should plant it in the bag so as not to disturb the roots so that is what I did but now the leaves on the tree are turning brown and falling off, can you reccommend anything? thank you.

Answer
The burlap should have been removed during planting. The bag is stopping the moisture from getting to the roots. Since you just planted the tree I would dig it up and replant. Dig the new hole twice the size as the root ball and as deep. Fill with good top soil and mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. water every other day fro a couple of weeks then every third day with 1 inch of water place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop.  This will deep water the tree and cause the roots to grow deeper.
