Killing a Pussy Willow

Question
We are trying to get rid of a pussy willow we've had for 10+ years. The main tree has died off, but it has now sent out shoots a few feet away. They are unfortunately sprouting up right next to our Pear tree that is still trying to get established. We have sprayed them, cut them back, sprayed them again, but they are still growing.

What will ultimately kill the little suckers off?

Answer
Hi Sharon,
Thanx for your question.  Apparently, some of the roots of the pussy will are still alive.  I would remove the main tree and try to dig up what roots you can.  You'll just have to keep cutting (mowing) or apply Roundup to them individually so you don't harm the pear tree.  Wearing plastic or vinyl gloves, I put some round up in a cup and take a small paint brush and apply the Roundup to individual weeds on which I want to isolate the poison and save from getting on plants I want to keep.  Eventually, you will get rid of all the growth but it will take repeated efforts.  I hope this helps.
Tom
