Willow Cuttings

Question
I plan to cut willows along our stream, dip them in rooting medium (because it helps) and plant them directly into the stream-side. We want them to reinforce the stream edge.
Should they be cut before the buds leaf out? When I cut them, should I try to plant the same day? What length should I cut them. Is there a best diameter to aim for?

Answer
As long as you retain the top set of leaves, it does not matter if the plant has budded. Although, by cutting them before they bud, the new seedlings will expend all of their energy into the root system rather than budding, which will hasten their maturation.

You definitely want to plant them the same day. I always prune cuttings 6-8 inches, although 4" is sufficient. Diameter is of no consequence.

Good luck, and have a great weekend.

Mike
