pussy willow tree bees

Question
I have a pussy willow tree about 15'  that has tons of bees all over it and when you look at the bees they seem to be small but they sting my boyfriend has been stung several times when he mows the grass. is there anything we can get to get rid of them. we have a garden around the area and don't want to hurt the rest of the plants.

Answer
It sounds like these bees are feeding on the willow not have a nest in the tree?? IF so they are feeding on the secretion form scales or aphids called Honeydew. These insects suck the plant juices from the plant and secrete a substance called honeydew which is high in sugar content and sticky. Ants and bees feed on this. Control the scales and aphids and the bees will go away. I would spray the tree with (all the foliage and  branches) an insecticide called Orthene. This will be absorbed by the foliage and kill the scale and aphids. The bees will stop since they will have nothing to feed on. There is a soil applied insecticide that the tree will take up by the roots and transport it to the foliage. BUT this late in the Fall the tree will soon shut down so the spay it best now. I would apply the soil insecticide next spring It is called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect control and can be found at your local garden type store. Neither insecticides will harm the other plants in fact will help control insects on them.  Here is a web link to this product. http://www.bayeradvanced.com/tree-shrub-care/products/12-month-tree-shrub-insect
