I have an Haas avocado seed which has sprouted in water. How and when do I plant it in soil.  Does it matter what kind of dirt it is in? Will it grow in a pot? Crawfordville, FL

Joan, you should wait until spring to plant the seedling outdoors, but given your location, you can do it now as long as you do not expect a frost within three months.

If you prefer, you can plant the seedling in a 10" pot until spring. Regardless, you need to plant it in a fertile medium. A potting mix would work fine for the potted option; if you plant outdoors you would need to amend the soil with compost, aged manure, and/or peat. This organic mix will get the seedling off to a great start.
