Datura – Planting Seed

Q: I recently purchased a ‘Purple Horn of Plenty’. Although I was told that it would re-seed itself and to look for seeds that looked like golf balls. They did not tell me how long to leave the seeds on the plant or how to take care of the seeds.

A: The scientific name for your plant is Datura metel ‘Double Purple’. Many members of the Datura family are known as Devil’s Trumpet because their flowers point upwards. Angel Trumpet (Brugmansia spp.) flowers typically point downwards.

Save the seeds when the pods break open. Keep them in a cool dry place for winter and plant in a sunny spot in spring.
