Avacodas

Question
How to grow a avacoda tree from seed?

Answer
Hi Robert,
Thanx for your question.  Take a fresh seed from the avocado fruit and clean it of all pulp.  On the flat end, gently stick in 4 toothpicks so that the seed can be suspended in a jar or glass of water with the pointed end going down into the water.  Change the water often so it doesn't get cloudy and stinky.  Rooting can happen in a month and sometimes longer.  As soon as you get a root, find a large pot and fill it with good potting soil.  Plant the seed about 3 or 4 inches deep and be careful not to break the root.  Once green growth appears above the soil, take the plant outdoors, if it's not below 60 degrees F. and place it in the shade and protect it from rain, hail, wind, etc. for about 10 days.  After that, it will need full sun and lots of warmth.  You can grow it as a house plant by cutting the central top of the plant back and encouraging bushy growth.  This will take some time.  The tree will be old enough to fruit after 5-7 years.  Potted fruit trees should be frequently watered but also well draining.  I hope this helps.
Tom
