Canary date palm seed

Question
I read your answer concerning the above seed.  I have one of these trees, it has seeded and have dropped to the floor.  They are now black and hard.  Can I plant them or should I wait for the next crop and start afresh. I live in southern spain.  Thankyou. Phil

Answer
Hi Phil,
Thanx for your question.  I hope to visit Spain some day.  Yes, you can plant your Canary Island Date Palm seeds now.  The seeds on the ground are fresh enough.  Be sure to get all the fruit and fiber off of the seed.  Soak the seed for 10 days in warm water, changing the water if it gets cloudy, then plant.  Keep the soil moist but not soggy.  It may take up to six months to germinate for some of the seeds and maybe only a month for others.  I hope this helps.
Tom
