Canary Date Palm seeds

Question

seed
What are the steps to plant this type of seed??  I have attached an image of the seed

Answer
Hi Emilio,
Thanx for your question.  Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix carariensis) is easy to start from seed.

Canary Island Date Palm seeds are found in the orange/yellow fruit.  Make sure to clean all the fruit off of the seed as the fruit will deter germination.  After you've cleaned the fruit off soak the seed for 24 hours in fresh water with no chlorine in it.  Take a clear plastic container and put moist but not soggy potting soil in it making sure there are 3-4 inches of soil.  Push the seed in about 1 inch deep.  Seal the container and place in a warm area.  Do not place in the sun.  It would be like planting seed and leaving it inside a car with the windows rolled up. The sun will cook the seeds.  Germination can occur in as little as one or two weeks.  The books say 30-300 days depending on conditions.  I'd give it six months.  Mostly, when I've planted palm seeds, they've generally germinated in 1-3 months.  I hope this helps.

Tom
