I have a large staghorn fern in my front yard I would like to split up into several smaller ones. What is the best way to do so?

Sam, the only way to split a plant is to divide the root ball. As with most perennials, you need to take a spade and drive it through the center of the root ball. You can then take the divided plants and replant them separately. It sounds harsh, but it's actually a safe process. Just be sure to water the plants deeply for the first week to help the roots get reestablished.
