Starting Japanese peonys from seed

Question
I have a Japanese fern leaf peony and would like to start new plants from it seeds.  Is there anything special I need to do to grow them from seed?  I live in Eagle River, AK zone 3.

Answer
Hi Denise,
Thanx for your question.  Take the seeds and plant them in a pot of potting soil about 1/2 inch deep and keep them warm for 3 months.  The roots will grow first but you won't see any green growth.  Seal the pots inside a plastic baggie to maintain humidity.  Do not put in sunlight or this will fry them.  After the 3 months, place in a cool place that is above freezing but cold.  I would suggest sealed in the bag and placed in the fridge.  Leave in the fridge for about 3 months.  After that, put back in a warm place the seedlings should begin to emerge.  I hope this helps.
Tom
