Germination

Question
QUESTION: Hi, about a week ago I planted spring onion, two different spices and some californian pepper. Last week it was quiete warm so I decided to plant them and now it is raining and its been frosty outside for 3 days. They were supposed to sprout by now and my question is will they sprout eventually? I have covered the flowerpots with things like black bin bags, cling film and recycled bags and put them in my shed so should I leave them covered or uncovered also I put them in the sun when its sunny.

ANSWER: Hi Jamil,
Thanx for your question.  I believe the onions will eventually sprout. The peppers...they need a warm environment to sprout and will eventually rot in cold, wet environment.  Next time, start peppers at home in small cups of potting soil and spearate later when they have their first set of true leaves. Leave the pots of onions outside.  I'd bring the pots of peppers indoors just in case they may still be able to germinate.  If they haven't germinated in 21 days, start over.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Hi the onions eventually sprouted and one of the peppers did too! I dug up the rest of the pepper seeds and made sure that they were alive (I did the water test. Then I got a smaller pot and moved the seeds indoors. Also I didnt see any spices sprout, do you think they will? Its starting to get sunny again so I think they have a chance.

Answer
Hi Jamil,
Thank you for the follow up.  I would leave the peppers indoors in a sunny window sill until they sprout.  When they germinate, the seedlings should be moved outdoors if it is warm enough because window light will not be enough.  Generally, if it doesn't get below 50癋/10癈, you should be able to leave the peppers outdoors.  They actually benefit from cooler temperatures once they have germinated under warm conditions.  I hope this helps.
