jasmine

Question
I purchased and planted a jasmine vine about 4 years ago.I don't remember exactly what kind it was. It has grown very well and is covering the fence I planted it next to. Here in south Georgia where I live it thrives in winter like an evergreen. My question is, why has it never in all this time bloomed. I have never seen a single flower on it. The pretty flowers and fragrance they have was the main reason I purchased this vine. Am I doing something wrong or could it be a variety that does not bloom at all? Thanks, sonbob

Answer
Hey, Sonjie.

There are, indeed, varieties that do not bloom, but it would be somewhat unlikely that you bought one at a nursery or home improvement store. They generally are exchanged by jasmine collectors and specialists.

Since it is thriving, it might be thriving too much. I'd try cutting back slightly on water and/or fertilizer. I water my ground-cover jasmines for about 10 minutes once a week and they do very well. I do not fertilize them at all.

If that doesn't work, then try some super-bloom fertilizer using the manufacturer's directions.

If that doesn't work, you just might have one of the non-blooming varieties that got through the system. There's also the possibility that a different vine was mislabeled as a jasmine since that occasionally happens. To be sure of what you're getting with blooming plants, always try to buy them when they are blooming.
