Trillium

Question
Viktoria - do you happen to know that particular species of Trillium that only grows in boggy areas (I am in Ontario). It is the small-flowered species of Trillium. We have a small colony near us but they are certain to get mashed by golfers looking for lost balls along a stream bounding the new golf course. Would anyone be interested in saving them or do we just say 'c'est la vie' and let them go?

Answer
Trillium cernuum, Nodding Trillium, "...prefers cool, low, moist to swampy woodlands, streambanks...and pond borders..." (Trilliums, by Frederick W. Case, Jr. and Roberta B. Case).  It is native in Ontario.

This Trillium has a rather large area of distribution, and I do not believe it is a threatened species.  I do not know who in your area (you are, after all, in a foreign country :) ) might be interested in rescuing the plants, but you could do it yourself if you like.  They move well when they are in bloom; just keep them from drying out until they have had time to become re-established, which is not too hard to do in the spring.
